The President of Zimbabwe Emerson Manangagua announced that he will suspend the customs tariffs on the goods imported from the United States in an attempt to build a “positive relationship” with the administration of President Donald Trump.
The move comes days after Trump imposed a 18 % tariff on Zimbabwe’s exports to the United States.

Zimbabwe has tense diplomatic relations with the United States because it adopted a controversial earthly policy for about 25 years, and because of the poor human rights record.

The US -exported goods worth $ 43.8 million (34 million pounds) to Zimbabwe in 2024, an increase of 10.6 % over the previous year, while imports decreased by 41 % to 67.8 million dollars.
The political analyst at Zimbabwe MBANJE told Agence France -Presse that the decision would not lead to great economic advantages for Zimbabwe and will benefit the United States only.
The prominent journalist in Zimbabwe and government critic Hopuel Cheno said the president seems to be trying to “satisfy” the Trump administration.

The United States imposed for the first time sanctions on the Zimbabwe government during the rule of Robert Mugabe after it presented a land reform program in 2000, which led to the seizure of the farm -owned farms, and because of the repressive measures taken against the opposition.
The Biden administration in the United States canceled sanctions in 2024, replacing it with the targeted sanctions on 11 individuals – including Mnangagwa – for “democratic retreat, human rights violations, and government corruption.”
Mnangagwa has already denied these allegations, describing the sanctions as “illegal and justified.”
He announced his decision to relinquish the customs tariffs on American imports, he said that Zimbabwe’s focus was on “strengthening friendly relations with all nations, and developing testicular relationships with nothing.”
“This procedure confirms our commitment to the framework of fair trade and enhancing bilateral cooperation,” he added.
Chin’ono said Mnangagwa is currently the regional SADC president, and he must try to put a common response to the United States rather than acting unilaterally.
“When countries face global economic transformations, coordinated responses offer better crane and stability,” he added.
Lizoto – another country of South Africa – was exposed to a 50 % tariff, the highest in the list issued by Trump on Wednesday.
Her government said that she would send a delegation to the United States to negotiate a new deal, and would search for new markets for its goods.
