Herbert Kickl is the first far-right leader since World War II to be invited to form a government.

Austria may soon join a growing number of European Union countries led by the far right.

Months of negotiations led by the conservative Austrian People’s Party ended without a coalition and the president, a former left-wing leader of the Green Party, had no choice but to look further to the right.

The Freedom Party (FPO) is anti-immigration and pro-Russian.

Its leader, Herbert Kickl, is scheduled to begin negotiations with the conservatives and hopes to become chancellor.

Will he succeed?

If he does, what does the future look like for Austria’s faltering economy and large immigrant population?
