Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators who call for democracy are immersed in Türkiye, which represents the largest anti -government protests in the modern history of the country.

The protests erupted on March 19 in response to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ikram Emamoglu on charges of corruption.

Emamoglu’s mayor has been a major opposition figure against Erdogan since 2019. But these protests are not necessarily for Imamoglu alone.

Demonstrations focus on issues such as monitoring of the media, authoritarianism, freedom of expression and gathering, all of this together.

They are not necessarily protests against Emamoglu, but against Erdogan. Why are the Turkish youth very brave now that they have lost their future.

They lost their chances, but while they were doing it, they also lost their fear. We have nothing to be afraid of. This is how we are easily in the streets that are fighting for a future.

Do you see a difference this time compared to previous protests?

The biggest difference, especially in comparison with Gezi protests in 2013 and 2014And that was the largest in this contract, is the intersection.

Erdogan has gained many enemies in the past ten years that people do not care about their differences anymore. They only care if you support Erdogan or against Erdogan.

I haven’t seen such various protests in my life. They know that they are against Erdogan and this is enough for them.

It makes sense that we have a lot of polarization in the country, (thus) that the only way to pass through this is to meet.

Do you think that (the economic boycott) will have a kind of influence that you and your mourners mediate?

Yes, I think so. If not, even if it does not have a significant impact on the country’s economy, I think it will continue to give people the feeling that they can do something.

What do you want to hear and see from other countries?

I would like to say that the main problem in Turkey at the present time is that the authorities that do not care about the protests, so what I suggest to decision makers abroad is to urge the Turkish authorities to listen to our needs, and if you are not a decision maker outside Turkey, I will urge you to contact your decision makers so that they can speak against these human rights violations.

How do you feel about the climate at the present time, the possibility of releasing Emamoglu and the type of change you want to see?

I still feel more optimistic about the possibilities, given that I am not a politician, I do not spend my days in Parliament, and I speak with the same people.

I am always in the streets, I see hope for people, I see hope for young people. This makes me still optimistic.
