Who does Luna Lovegood marry in the Harry Potter universe?

Since the Harry Potter book series is written mostly from Harry’s point of view, many of the minor characters get very little page time to make the right impression. Especially in the first few books where the author was trying to keep the pace light and breezy, you’d be surprised upon re-reading how little material we got of fan-favorite characters like Neville, McGonagall, the Weasley twins, etc. The focus is always on the core trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione, with everyone stopping here and there. Even Dumbledore, whose presence looms large throughout the entire series, only speaks to Harry once every two hundred pages or so. In fact, the two barely speak at all in “Prisoner of Azkaban.” (Hermione He actually gets more time with him than Harry In the movie.)

Luna Lovegood is one of many characters who excels at her page count. She appears out of nowhere in “Order of the Phoenix” and is absent for long periods of time from “Deathly Hallows,” but through sheer force of weirdness she has become a top ten character for many readers and viewers. It helps that she’s the series’ first in-depth introduction to the Ravenclaw house, and that her isolated atmosphere means there’s a refreshing lack of relationship drama with her compared to the rest of the teenage characters.

The result is that 17 years after the last book ended, many fans are still interested in what happens to Luna after the Battle of Hogwarts. We have no doubt that she will succeed in life, perhaps as the new Divination professor at Hogwarts, but who will she marry? A lot of fans wanted her to end up with Neville and a lot of other fans wanted her to end up with Harry. But assuming JK Rowling is to be believed, Luna’s husband is someone no book reader would expect. As Rowling He explained in a 2007 interview:

Given that everyone else in the main trio is marrying their high school sweetheart, who is this strange outsider Luna ends up settling down with?

There’s not a lot of information for fans to work with here. I think it’s lovely, even though there’s nothing in any of these previous films that even hints that these two people are interested in each other. It seems like a case of the screenwriters wanting to give Luna a memorable note to end on, since the writers don’t give her any big heroine moments like Neville does. What’s worse is that it feels as if the writers simply attached Neville to the only main female character they could think of who didn’t have a boyfriend yet.

Perhaps the biggest problem with pairing these two, if you subscribe to the theory that the Neville/Luna movie was a permanent thing, is that it makes the wizarding world seem too small. If too many main characters are marrying their high school sweethearts, it creates a feeling that Hogwarts is the only thing that matters here, and none of these characters have meaningful experiences outside of school.

The good news, at least for Neville and Luna haters, is that Evanna Lynch doesn’t think the two are a long-term goal. “Luna wants to go out and explore the world and different creatures, and I think she wants to have a few different relationships and not be committed forever.” he said in a 2016 interview. “Neville wants a good, strong wife who cooks, and this is not her.”

Luna’s life after Hogwarts is a slight disappointment to some “Harry Potter” fans because they would have preferred Luna to end up with Harry. This may seem like an odd pairing to some, especially since in the books Harry often complains about Luna’s strange behavior, but some Potters are so interested in the ship that they will write 70,000 words + fanfiction About him anyway.

The gist of the Luna/Harry shipping is that the two have personalities that contrast in interesting and compelling ways. Harry is an honest guy who just wants to feel normal and accepted by his peers, while Luna is an eccentric hippie who doesn’t care at all what others think of her. Especially in movies, Jenny as a love interest gives fans nothing to work with: There’s no chemistry between the actors, and the entire story feels like it’s layered on top of a complex enough movie set. Ginny’s book is a little better, thanks to having more time to build a lasting impression on readers, but she still lacks that spark as a character that Luna had from day one. Luna is effortlessly likable and adorable, while the books seem to do their best to convince us that Ginny is adorable, with mixed results. Ginny and Harry may be canon, but in the hearts of some fans, Luna and Harry are the perfect couple.
