The first trailer for director James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ introduces the bold new DC universe. And with it a number of strong players. The main characters of the film may be classic Superman legends such as the Man of Steel himself (David Corenswet), Lois Lane (Rachel Broshahan), and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) – and let’s not forget The most adorable DC character ever, Krypto the Superdog. However, the show also introduces several heroes whose main link to Superman is the Justice League.
In Gunn’s DCU, such a superhero team doesn’t quite exist yet, so much so that Superman is the only member of the team’s DC Extended Universe-era makeup who is currently an active DCU player. However, several of the additional superhero characters in the trailer have long histories with the Justice League, and may end up joining Superman as members during Gunn’s DCU tenure. Let’s take a look at who exactly these heroes are.
Jay Gardner
The man with the unfortunate blonde haircut who approaches the decrepit Superman in the building’s lobby is none other than Jay Gardner (Nathan Fillion). That energy-blasting ring on his right middle finger? That’s exactly what you think. One of several members of the Green Lantern Corps, Gardner possesses the organization’s signature power ring that enables him to create many powerful energy constructs using only his willpower.
In addition to his great powers, Gardner is known as DC’s angriest superhero. In the comics, his temper and arrogance were such that Batman once knocked him out with a single punch — while the Dark Knight oversaw the Justice League and Gardner was a member, no less.
Before Justice League, Gardner’s DCU path will take him to the DCU show “Lanterns,” which is set to premiere in 2026. There, the character will team up with two of the most famous Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart. (Aaron Pierre).
Falcon Girl
The woman with wings and an unnerving spiked mace, Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), has been around a long time — longer than the vast majority of other DC heroes, in fact. In the comics, she has a form of immortality that allows her to be reborn as new versions of herself endlessly. As such, it effectively represents itself and A long lineage of winged warrior women. This has enabled her to join a whole bunch of different superhero teams over the years, and of course one of those teams is the Justice League. Aside from her ability to fly, she is much stronger than any normal person and has a healing factor to deal with the damage she receives in battle. However, arguably her most dangerous attribute is the sheer combat skill and vast experience that her strange power set grants her.
Furthermore, Hawkgirl is rarely a lone threat because her partner, Hawkman, shares exactly the same traits. Don’t expect to see this guy in a “Superman” movie. Barring surprises, it appears that Hawkman will be absent from this particular film, perhaps because Aldis Hodge’s version of the character plays a prominent role in the DCEU film “Black Adam” (which was just released in late 2022).
Mr. Wonderful
Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) appears in the trailer with some cool technology and his signature T-shaped face mask. His real name is Michael Holt, and his superpower is simply that he is extremely intelligent and strives to understand and solve every problem he encounters. His sheer ambition has helped him become an Olympic gold medalist and certified genius who also happens to be incredibly wealthy. He may not be able to squeeze into passenger plane seats or shoot beams from his eyes, but he makes up for it with a vast array of equipment – equipment so advanced that even ordinary high technology often seems like sticks and stones in comparison.
The character’s signature crime-fighting tool is the T-sphere. This group of advanced, spherical-shaped robotic drones are capable of many different attack and support actions, and can be seen in the trailer forming a force field around Mister Terrific.
As teamwork goes, it’s worth noting that the character is best known for his work in the Justice Society of America. However, his status as a charismatic, rich, super-intelligent tech hero may end up making him the DCU’s equivalent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony “Iron Man” Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
Transformation
Rex Mason, aka superhero Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), is only briefly glimpsed in the trailer. However, a close-up of his face reveals a very comedic-accurate look at the character (one whose powers are perhaps the most visually impressive in the DCU).
Metamorpho, also known as Element Man, is a somewhat outcast character who gained the ability to transform his body into various elements when he worked as a mercenary and encountered an ancient artifact known as the Orb of Ra. However, it also turned him into a pale, inhuman figure, which Mason was not happy about. Eventually, he discovers that his new form actually belongs to a mysterious class of beings known as Metamorphae, and meets others of his kind.
Metamorpho’s history with the Justice League has been somewhat rocky in the comics, but he has been known to hover around them, even joining some versions of the group over the years. As such, the powerful hero is a fairly likely candidate for a team membership card in the DCU.
“Superman” hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
