Ben Schwartzman and Carol Kane star in the mostly improvised comedy, Among the Ferns
Between the Temples, a mostly improvised comedy directed by Nathan Silver, follows Ben, a sad singer played by Jason Schwartzman, and Carla (Carol Kane), a retired school teacher interested in having a bat mitzvah. Through their work together, Ben and Carla grow closer and find a sense of healing in their lives as they overcome the constant dysfunction caused by their families and friends.
With 175 credits to her name, Kane has likely played at least one character she loves. There’s Simka Dahblitz-Gravas, Andy Kaufman’s Latka wife, in the sitcom Taxi — a role that won her her first and only Golden Globe. Miracle Max’s wife, Valerie, was in The princess bride. In Scrooge, she was handy with the toaster like the Ghost of Christmas Present. And in Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtShe steadily brought the laughs as Kimmy’s neighbor, Lillian Koshtober.
Kane received a Best Supporting Award from the New York Film Critics Circle and was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards for her performance in the film.
What makes this nomination different from previous awards? This is likely due to the harshness of her performance as Carla in the film, thanks to the improvisational style of the production. Instead of relying on the eccentric comedic stylings she’s been known for throughout her career, Kane taps into her authentic voice in Between the Temples, resulting in a resonant and heartfelt performance.
“There wasn’t a strong script, so having a lot of dialogue would be different,” Ken explained. Gold derby. “The essence and structure of the scene will be the same, but we can improvise the dialogue as we go.”
