Within hours of Assad’s flight from Damascus, a number of European countries announced the suspension of asylum applications submitted by Syrians, and some even called for the immediate deportation of refugees. With the formation of a new transitional government in Syria, uncertainty remains over the situation of millions of refugees who fled the conflict that began in 2011.
