Revealed at The Game Awards, the Thick As Thieves trailer shows the action between rival thieves – all four of them trying to get the lion’s share of the loot in a major heist.

Surveillance pays off in thick as thieves.

Warren Spector, co-founder of OtherSide Entertainment, said in an interview with GamesBeat that the game is a sort of next-gen work he started with Thief. Now, there are new elements and strategies emerging that emerge when you have human minds behind the four main competitors.

“The co-founders of OtherSide Entertainment helped pioneer the stealth action genre with the original Thief and Deus Ex games,” Benjie Clarke, managing director of global publishing at Megabit, said in a statement. “Their collaboration on OtherSide has brought this vision to life, which is now focused on pushing the boundaries with new perspectives. Thick as Thieves represents the next step in what an immersive action game can achieve and how sharing that experience with other players leads to amazing player-driven storytelling.”

Set in an alternate historical city where technology and magic collide, Thick as Thieves immerses you in a complex and detailed world of glittering wealth, a thriving criminal underclass, and a touch of magic. As the upper class accumulates wealth and power and the lower class struggles to survive, you weave your way through both worlds, seeking treasure and glory with stealth and cunning.

Players engage in a unique competitive multiplayer experience, where sneaking, stealing, and escaping lead to success. The game rewards smart tactics, planning and improvisation. Thick as Thieves embodies OtherSide’s commitment to player-driven agency, creating an experience where every playstyle can unfold uniquely in a vibrant world.

“Thick as Thieves embodies the vision of immersive play on which OtherSide was founded,” Spector said. “With this game, we empower players to create their own stories in a world that values observation, skill, and creative problem-solving.”

Watch out for the guards.

“OtherSide is designed to take the immersive simulation game genre to the next step. What that means is multiplayer, and a focus on campaigns, not just live services. It’s as much a creative decision for us as it is a business model,” Spector said. We call it stealth work with a capital S and a capital A and put together a team of experienced and new people.”

In addition to Spector, I spoke with Greg Lapiccolo, who was the game director on the original Thief and understands stealth and thief very well. David McDonough, who was the lead designer, came from Firaxis, where he worked on RTS games.

OtherSide Entertainment was founded in 2016 by co-founders Paul Neurath and Warren Spector, who first began working together in the 1990s, providing creative direction for games that pioneered the “immersive simulation” genre.

The studio’s vision is to create highly immersive games that challenge the traditional approach and offer a new perspective, while enabling players to choose their own play style for a truly unique experience. OtherSide Entertainment is currently in development with supporting titles including Argos: Riders On The Storm and Thick As Thieves.

The game is designed for regular replayability. Matches can take 20 to 30 minutes. The landscape, robbery target, and enemies can add different dimensions to the game. But the game pits four competing thieves against each other on a mission to steal the loot and obtain the largest amount of loot. You can choose to spend your time besting NPCs or hounding your fellow players by setting traps that can cause them to lose their loot or just drop out of the match.

“Everything is systematically driven, which means that everything you do affects the entire scene and everything the other thieves do affects you as well,” Spector said. “So you’re competing with other thieves through all these complicated ways.”

You can play the same map 100 times and matches will never look the same because of the human element.

There is nothing preventing human players from forming alliances and allying with other players. But there is only one winner in the match. Each character is different and has a different story.

Spector said the title Thick as Thieves rolls off the tongue and tells you there is more than one thief in the game.

There are a lot of combat and aggressive playstyles that work really well. You can ambush other thieves or chase them down and try to take them out of the match.

Battle in the library.

“You have to think creatively and improvisationally about everything that happens,” Spector said.

Compared to previous Thief games, Spector said: “The biggest takeaway is introducing other players. Most of what we’ve worked on in the past has been single-player, which have been great experiences that we’re proud of and so on, but introducing other humans who have their own agendas.” Being in an immersive simulation has a completely different context when you’ve got other people there. It’s way more intense.”

The game contains light and shadow gameplay. You can hide in the dark from the AI just like you would in any title. But can you hide from another player and look into their eyes?
