Taking place on December 21, from the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will be an immediate rematch between WBA/WBC/WBC heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk against former world champion Tyson Fury.

Not long ago, in 2018, we had a unique and historically unprecedented situation in the history of heavyweight boxing. Anthony Joshua was the undefeated IBF/WBA/WBO unified heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder was the undefeated WBC heavyweight champion, and the undefeated Tyson Fury was still the world heavyweight champion.

Three undefeated heavyweights, each with a legitimate claim to calling themselves heavyweight champion. It was an exciting time for the heavyweight division, and expectations were that Joshua, Wilder and Fury would have a host of bouts between the three. But this did not happen. Fury and Wilder had an epic, era-defining trilogy, and that was it. So far, AJ has not fought the other two.

In recent years, AJ and Wilder have fallen out of the spotlight, and it’s clear that both are now outside the top three where they stood for so long. In this sense, Tyson Fury is the last man standing of his era. Usyk has since emerged as a heavyweight powerhouse, but he has never been a true contemporary of the other three, as Usyk spent the majority of the Fury and Joshua Wilder era as cruiserweight champion.

Fury himself began a new era, when he defeated long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko back in November 2015, which officially marked the end of the Klitschko era (which lasted roughly from 2004 until the night Fury knocked out Wladimir).

Will Fury’s victory allow the era to live to see another day? Or will Usyk put the final nail in the coffin?
