Varney: Truck drivers union ready to step in at Christmas

During his show “My Take” on Thursday,Varney & Co“ Host Stuart Varney discussed the Truckers Union launching a nationwide strike against Amazon.

Stuart Varney: The Teamsters union represents about 10,000 Amazon workers. They are on strike.

One warehouse in San Francisco affected, in addition to six delivery stations spread across the country.

The union wants more money for delivery drivers. They accuse Amazon of… Not showing respect for workers.

It’s the timing of the strike that matters to me. Right before Christmas. It’s hard to “respect” union members when they inflict maximum pain on Amazon and its customers.

Millions of families are searching for their gifts in those Amazon boxes. Some will be disappointed. This strike is just plain bad.

It is true that the union needs influence. You have to apply pressure to force the employer to give in and pay.

But raising Christmas presents is a bridge too far. We do not know how effective this strike is.

If all 10,000 team members went on strike, it would only be a small fraction of Amazon’s 1.5 million workers worldwide. The effects may be minimal. We’ll see.

Deliberately harming ordinary people at this particular time of year leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

The Union demands respect, but it is difficult to respect anyone who goes out of their way to inconvenience their fellow Americans.

The big picture here is that Amazon is fighting unions. Management wants to maintain control of the business.

They want to keep the union out. This strike won’t solve that fight, but it will show that the union is willing to get involved in your Christmas. I hope they lose!
