Trump loses bid to stop ruling in silent money case

A New York Court of Appeals judge on Tuesday denied a request by the president-elect Donald Trump To delay his crime Judgment Friday to convict him in a case related to the payment of a sum Hush money For a porn star before the 2016 elections.

Judge Ellen Geismer denied the motion shortly after holding a hearing on Trump’s request. On Monday, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who conducted Trump’s trial, refused to postpone the sentencing.

Trump’s lawyers had argued that Trump was entitled to stay in the case because of a US Supreme Court ruling in July that presidents enjoy presumptive criminal immunity for official acts they take while in office.

The lawyers also claimed that Trump would suffer irreparable harm and his constitutional rights would be violated if he was sentenced 10 days before he was sworn in for a second term.

Gesmer was skeptical of those claims during the hearing.

She noted that Merchan has already said that it is unlikely that Trump will be given any prison sentence. Merchan also said he was leaning against ordering Trump to serve any probation or pay any fine in the case.

“After consideration of the submitted papers and extensive oral arguments, Movant’s request for temporary residency is denied,” Gesmer wrote in her ruling.

Trump was convicted in May of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with his then-lawyer Michael Cohen’s $130,000 payment to film actress Stormy Daniels.

Cohen paid Daniels on the eve of the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence about an alleged one-time sexual tryst with Trump in 2006.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels.
