Tottenham 4 – 3 Manchester United

Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals on a night filled with horrific goalkeeper errors and defensive errors.

These two teams have had frustratingly inconsistent seasons, and their backlines showed exactly why that is the case with error-riddled displays in north London, which left fans despondent and cheering during a volatile match.

Fraser Forster twice fumbled with the ball at his feet while scoring United’s goals, allowing Ruben Amorim’s side to come back from 3-0 down to 3-2. But as the visitors pushed forward and threatened to equalize and tensions rose at Tottenham, Altay Binder allowed Heung-Min Son’s corner kick to go over his head.

Add that to his poor save on Dominic Solanke to open the scoring that night, and it would be difficult to judge which backup keeper had a worse performance – but they were not alone.

Sky Sports Gary Neville criticized Lisandro Martinez for his “weak” pass to Dejan Kulusevski to score Tottenham’s second goal, which came just 46 seconds into the second half. The home side broke through the United defense again soon after, with Solanke getting inside Martinez before shooting through the legs of Jonny Evans to seemingly put Spurs on cruise control.

It’s rarely that simple for Spurs, though, and Forster’s weak pass into his own penalty area was pounced upon by Bruno Fernandes for Joshua Zirkzee to shoot over before goalkeeper Amad Diallo was chased down for a second time. Even in stoppage time, Spurs found the ability to concede from a set-piece, with Evans shaking his head to ensure the final seconds were as chaotic as what came before them.

There were huge cheers from the home team’s fans when the final whistle was blown. Their hopes of ending their trophy drought have been boosted – although if their last four encounters are as ferocious as this one, it is impossible to know whether they will reach Wembley or not. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s momentum stalled after their Manchester derby win. From off-pitch issues over Marcus Rashford’s future to problems on the pitch, Amorim has a big task on his hands – although he and Ange Postecoglou will hope their side can achieve more consistent and controlled success in the future when absentees return.
