One of my favorite things to do at the end of the year is the “Year in Review” movie mash-up, which reminds us of all the great movies that came out the previous year. They’re incredible little odes to cinema, and the “movie trailers” created by YouTuber Sleepy Skunk are among the best of all time. This year is no exception, as the “2024 Movie Trailer Mashup” (see above) is another wonderful, beautifully edited reminder of the magic of movies. (It’s better than the 2023 trailerHonestly, it wasn’t easy.)
2024 has been a great year for movieswith a wide range of stories for all types of audiences. In fact, there’s a little something for everyone, and the trailer mix reflects that. There are critical arthouse favorites like “The Brutalist,” along with mainstream popcorn movies like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” family movies like “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” as well as exploitation horror films like “The Substance,” all set to music and impeccably timed. . To highlight moments from each movie. It’s evocative stuff and is sure to make you feel something. Better yet, it’s sure to make you want to check out some of the movies it has to offer.
So many great movies, so little time
Years ago, there was a Starz trailer that showed the movies on its service set to a remix of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” and the Sleepy Skunk videos seem like a continuation of that festive spirit, except they’re not. Promoting anything besides the joys of cinema (and perhaps their YouTube channel). It’s fun to watch the video and try to pick out all the movies you’ve seen, especially since some of them were subtly cut. (“Pool Man” during the little horror/thriller section is weirdly clever.) What’s even more fun is trying to identify movies you don’t know, because some of them might really catch your attention. The video starts with The strange and funny black-and-white indie comedy “Hundreds of Beavers” It includes plenty of other small releases alongside big contenders like “Dune: Part Two,” including “Sasquatch Sunset,” “Strange Darling,” “I Saw the TV Glow,” and “Memoir of a Snail.” , and “Nickel Boys”. And much more.
In the email Sleepy Skunk sent with the video’s release, he said he wasn’t aware of it at all, but that the Academy of Motion Pictures had been monitoring the mashups “for years,” and had hired him to put together the best film. A montage of the Oscars in 2025. It’s really great that the Academy is recognizing the talent of someone who clearly really loves movies, and at least we know that this year’s Best Picture montage will be a hit, even if The Oscars themselves are always kind of crap. Maybe it will help us all remember what the awards are about: celebrating movies, baby. Sleepy Skunk clearly understands this.
