India and the United States closed the conditions of the first phase of the long -awaited bilateral trade agreement, as the two sides are looking for an agreement within 90 days, according to a Reuters report. Step signals renewed momentum in a relationship, as trade crossed in two directions $ 118 billion in 2023-24, making the largest trading partner in India.
“We are a lot in commercial talks with the United States compared to other countries … there are a lot of possibilities in 90 days,” said a senior Reuters officials. The official added that the commercial links will actually continue on a regular basis, which hints to “the shape of a victory and a shape” to the deal soon.
In a major policy shift, the United States temporarily stopped imposing a new tariff on Indian imports for 90 days. This step, announced through the executive requests of the White House, provides a decisive comfort for Indian exporters who are struggling with new commercial barriers.
The comment delays the application of the mutual definitions submitted on April 2 under the Executive Order 14257. These were part of President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to reduce the US trade deficit and promote local industries. India was among the nations targeting a 26 percent slope tariff – where the prices imposed on their regional peers such as Thailand, Vietnam and China were imposed. The request is now paying the rear enforcement until July 9, 2025.
However, not all duties outside the table. The tariff on steel and aluminum (since March 12), and car components (from April 3) remain active, according to a commercial expert cited PTI. On the other hand, exemptions for the main sectors such as semiconductors, medicines, and some energy products continue.
In the letter of industry leaders on April 9, the Minister of Trade and Industry called for calm, and urged the exporters not to panic. The broader goal of the talk is ambitious: raising bilateral trade to $ 500 billion by 2030, up from the current $ 191 billion. The first stage of the deal is expected to conclude later this year.
