Tottenham host Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, with the competition providing Ange Postecoglou a big chance of winning the title this season.
The 2024/25 season has been an extremely disappointing one for Tottenham, with the north London club currently sitting 12th in the Premier League with just seven wins from 20 matches. Expectations could have been much higher, but cup competitions were a different story.
Tottenham are in a great position to qualify for the next round of the Europa League, having easily drawn the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Premier League leaders Liverpool stand in the way of Postecoglou’s team and a trip to Wembley. Arne Slott opted to field a strong team in the first leg, something former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson had hoped the Dutch coach would not do.
The Sky Sports pundit admitted that he feared for the London club after he watched the Reds’ starting lineup before the start of the match, after witnessing Liverpool crushes its former club just before Christmas.
“The level Tottenham showed was not good enough. Ange Postecoglou will know that,” Dawson said. Sky Sports. “There are a lot of reasons why, you have to look at the injuries they have had, the way they are playing. I was here for the 6-3 game before Christmas, and if things go like this, I fear for Tottenham.
“Liverpool, when you look at the team and how strong they are, I was hoping they would be a little bit weaker like they did in the last round against Southampton.”

The Carabao Cup is key to Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham
Given Spurs’ form in the league, cup competitions could determine whether Postecoglou remains as Spurs manager next season. Qualifying for the Champions League looks very unlikely for the London club at the moment, however, fans will consider the campaign a success if the cup is reached.
The Carabao Cup provides the Australian coach with a great opportunity to achieve that, and victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night should put to rest the questions that have been raised about the former Celtic boss over recent weeks.
