The war against the group officially ended in March 2019, when the US -backed SDF fighters and the Kurdis seized the eastern Syrian town of Baguz, which was the last segment of ISIS -controlled land.

The group was also defeated in Iraq in July 2017, when Iraqi forces regained Mosul. Three months later, ISIS was hit when SDF regained the northern city of Raqqa, which was the capital of the real group.
