The investigation was launched while the relatives of mining companies are accused of carrying out “less and less” to ensure safety.
An explosion in a mine in the northern Astorias area of Spain killed at least five workers and wounded four others, according to local emergency services.
The accident took place on Monday morning at the Cerredo mine in Degana, about 450 km (280 miles) northwest of Madrid, killing five people from the neighboring Lyon area between the ages of 32 to 54 years.
Adriana Lasra, the representative of the central government in Astorias, told reporters at the scene that the initial indicators showed that the explosion may be caused by methane, which is an explosive mixture in the mine, a phenomenon known as Fredamp.
“The police are already investigating what happened, they are already at the scene,” said Lasra.
The injured were taken to hospitals in nearby cities, two of whom were on a helicopter, suffering from burns, and in one case, a head injury.
With the spread of the explosion news, workers’ families flocked to the site, which was surrounded by police and emergency services.
“It is a scandal. Companies have used to ensure safety, but they do it less and less,” Jose Antonio Alvarez, close to a mining worker who died, told the regional newspaper El Komsio.

The local newspaper La Voz de Asturias said that the mine is owned by a recently created local company called Blue Solving, which was trying to re -display the site to extract “high -performance minerals” for industrial use.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent his “sincere condolences” to the families of the victims and wished “quick recovery” to the injury, in a letter posted on X.
Adrian’s regional prime minister, Adrian Parbon, announced two days of mourning, “as evidence of respect for the deceased.”
The mining for centuries was a major industry in Astorias, which is a dense mountainous area.
