South Korea’s opposition-controlled parliament decided to impeach the acting president, throwing the country into further political turmoil.

Lawmakers on Friday approved a motion to remove Han Dak-soo, who is also prime minister, after he resisted pressure to appoint three judges to fill vacant positions on the Constitutional Court.

This is the first time that an acting president has been removed in South Korea, and comes less than two weeks after President Yeon Suk-yeol was suspended from his duties due to his failure to seize power.

Friday’s vote came as the country’s Constitutional Court opened hearings on Yoon’s impeachment over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law this month.

This is a developing story
