Former Indian national cricket team player Sunil Gavaskar shared tips with the Rohit Sharma-led team ahead of the fourth Test of the series against the Australia national cricket team. He said hitters need to spend more time in the crease because that will allow them to get familiar with the shape of the pitch.
India national cricket team is all set to take on Australia national cricket team in the fourth match of the Test series. The daytime boxing test between the two teams begins on Thursday (December 26) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.
India’s batsmen have struggled to get going in the series. Apart from KL Rahul, no other batsman looked settled at the crease as they tried to get quick runs. The opening batsman has spent a lot of time at the crease and it is fair to say that is the reason behind his success in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal spent time in the middle in the first Test and was very successful as he hit a blistering century. But then, he failed to get going while top batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and others looked impatient, which is why they failed.
Don’t look at the scoreboard, just look at the clock and get there – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Indian national cricket team players not to look at the scorecard and advised them to spend time at the crease. He said their main focus for the opener should be there until lunch because that will give them a great idea of the field.
Sunil Gavaskar also added that Yashasvi Jaiswal is struggling with the new ball in the first over. So, according to him, KL Rahul should take the strike. He explained in his interview with Star Sports:
“…Don’t look at the scoreboard. Just look at the clock and get there. This is where I want to be for lunch. And because it gives you a little time to settle down, it also gives you a sense of what the stadium is like,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
“…Because he (Jaiswal) has now been out twice in the first innings in three deliveries, first ball in Adelaide, second ball here (Brisbane), maybe Rahul will take the first ball.” Sunil Gavaskar added.
I feel at the moment there is an urgent need to bat in India – Matthew Hayden
Matthew Hayden, who was part of the discussion on Sunil Gavaskar, said he felt a sense of urgency about India’s batting. He suggested that batsmen needed to find a way to pass the new ball.
While citing the example of Nathan McSwiney, Matthew Hayden said that even though the batsman did not score runs, he found a way to bat longer. Speaking about the wicket in Melbourne, he explained:
“I feel at the moment there is an urgent need to bat in India. Technically, find a way to get past the new ball. Try to find a way to stay and stay at the crease.
Nathan McSweeney didn’t set this series on fire but what he did do was resist the urge to exit early. Usman Khawaja is a bit the same. These are Australian conditions. It’s a new little ball. “Melbourne will be no different, nor will Sydney.”
