I found an interesting study on the Clarence Bass website here. A He studies Strength training among retirees has found that strenuous training is necessary to maintain muscle mass. The study compared a group doing intense resistance training versus a moderate-intensity group, and also versus a control group that did not exercise. Muscle mass was effectively maintained only for the heavy resistance group after four years. The heavy resistance group used weight machines, while the moderate group used resistance bands and body weight exercises. I would like to point out that you can still lift weights with resistance bands, you just have to use more of them.

Bottom line, go heavy! Clarence emphasizes this all the time and I’ve mentioned it sometimes or as well. It’s nice to see this proven, especially for us seniors, in a clear study like this.
