Yoon faces becoming the first president to be detained in the country’s history.

South Korean authorities arrived at the residence of President Yeon Suk-yul to arrest the deposed leader over his brief declaration of martial law.

Dozens of police and anti-corruption investigators entered the gate of Yoon’s complex in Seoul early Friday morning to execute an arrest warrant for him over his brief imposition of martial law on Dec. 3, plunging the East Asian country into its deepest political crisis in decades.

“The implementation of the arrest warrant against President Yeon Suk-yeol has begun,” the Corruption Investigation Bureau of Senior Officials said in a statement.

It is unclear whether Yoon, who is being investigated on suspicion of rebellion and abuse of authority, will cooperate with authorities seeking to arrest him.

Speculation has been rife about when and how authorities will detain Yoon since a Seoul court earlier this week granted prosecutors’ request to issue an arrest warrant.

Yoon’s security detail had previously prevented investigators from executing several search warrants directed at the president.

In a defiant New Year message to his supporters gathered outside his residence, Yoon pledged to “struggle to the end” against “anti-state forces.”

If arrested, Yoon would be the first president to be detained in South Korean history.
