This post contains Spoilers About the “Skeleton Crew”.
The “Skeleton Crew” may take a long time An Amblin-esque approach to the classic “Star Wars” adventure (read our film review here), but that doesn’t mean things can’t get scary. However, ever since Wim (Rafi Cabot Conyers) and his friends accidentally left the Aten checkpoints, the children have faced one dangerous situation after another, especially after… He meets the mysterious Jude (Jude Law). Episode 5 deliberately paves the crew’s latest adventure with nostalgia-laden references — everything from “The Goonies” to “Indiana Jones” — only to undermine any feelings of comfort associated with it by ending things on a note of betrayal. Just like Wim’s painful realization in this episode, it becomes crystal clear Space adventures are often more dangerous than excitingBeing surrounded by adults who do not hesitate to threaten children can never be an ideal situation.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as “Skeleton Crew” continues its established trend of juggling dramatic stakes with sincere and often sarcastic humor. Godwick’s list of cool titles continues to grow (Dash Zinten! Godwick Zunk!), and the crew ends up on a planet that was once a pirate base, which has now been transformed into the fun-focused vacation center, Lanoba. Given the record of horrific events occurring on holiday planets in “Star Wars” — examples include Nyamus Beach on Andor and Canto Bight in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” — it makes sense to be wary of Lanoba. The Lanupa turns out to be just as obnoxious and shady as one would expect, with the highly controversial Banking Clan still operating in the shadows during the New Republic era.
But wait, there’s more! A certain member of a notorious gangster clan can be seen on this pleasure planet, acting completely ungrateful as a respected guest… Let’s look into it.
Star Wars will always feature the Hutt as a threat
Jabba the Hutt requires no introduction, and his influence extends far beyond canonical events, thanks to a criminal empire that flourished in the Outer Rim. Although Jabba’s criminal legacy looms large, other crime lords from the Hutt Clan have been known to be just as smart and ruthless as him (if not more so) over the years. However, “Skeleton Crew” plays the Hutt scene as a humorous gag, as a member of the Hutt clan can be seen eating an innocent Troglof servant while relaxing in a mud bath at the spa. “Please sir, not again!” The poor servant pleads, while the Hutt happily chews, leaving the effects of this statement in the air.
While it is unclear who the members of the Hutt clan are, it is possible that they are One of the twins introduced in “The Book of Boba Fett.” The twins are Jabba’s cousins, and served during the New Republic era until Boba Fett usurped their hold on Tatooine. It is worth noting that the twins sent the bounty hunter Christiantan to kill Fett, and upon failure, they apologized to him and offered him malice as a tribute. Is it possible that someone came to Lanupa for vacation (after abandoning Tatooine) and casually eats servers just because they can? It’s not entirely impossible, and there’s not much to be gleaned from this fun little demo.
However, there are more pressing matters to which we should turn our attention, such as the booby-trapped, acid-filled rooms that lead to (equally booby-trapped) pirate treasures, which also reveal the coordinates of Aten. Jude’s sudden transformation was only a matter of time, but I can’t help but worry about the group of frightened kids who have now learned that turning to adults for protection in such a vast galaxy will always be a double-edged sword.
