Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios appeared at The Game Awards to showcase two new titles: one a new title and one an older one. The premiere is dedicated to a new entry in the legendary fighting game series Virtua Fighter, which Sega plans to discuss in more detail at an upcoming live event. The second is dedicated to a completely new IP – a historical adventure game currently called Project Century.
Justin Scarponi, Sega’s global head of transmedia, teased the existence of a new Virtua Fighter game earlier this year in Interview with VGC. It’s one of several old franchises the company is reviving, including Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. At the time, all Scarpone said was that there was “another Virtua Fighter” in development. The trailer offers little information about the new game, not even in the title, though it does show one female fighter who appears to be franchise owner Sarah Bryant.
Best known for the Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) series, RGG Studios has done historical adventures before – Like a Dragon: Ishin! It is set during the Bakumatsu period, for example. Project Century is set in Japan in 1915, and feels separate from any of the characters and stories in the series so far.
