A new hard drive based on the long-promised Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology is almost here. Reportedly, a new sales page has appeared on Seagate’s website announcing new products (HDD) features 3TB of capacity per platter with three times the energy efficiency per terabyte compared to other hard drives.
The new hard drive is based on the new Seagate drive It is the first hard drive to use HAMR. HAMR refers to a magnetic storage process in which local heat is applied to the disc material during writing, allowing for smaller areas and more space per platter. These and other advances could one day pave the way for a 50TB hard drive.
