Sanju Samson, who made his debut for India in 2015, struggled with inconsistency and was in and out of white-ball teams over the next few years. The Kerala batsman scored his maiden international century in an ODI against South Africa in December 2023. Samson has also scored three centuries in his last five T20I innings.

In a conversation with AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel, Samson said that Gautam Gambhir played a pivotal role in his success. Samson noted that the coach encouraged him to play freely and express himself in every round. He stated that this clear communication boosted his self-confidence.
“When he came to the Indian team, in the dressing room, he said to me, ‘Sanju, I know what you have. You have something special. “I will come back to you no matter what.” He asked me to come in, “Go.” “I was out there playing and expressing myself every round, and that kind of communication from the coach gave me clarity and confidence,” Sampson said.

Sanju Samson admitted that he was disappointed by his initial failures, as he was keen to justify the trust placed in him by Gautam Gambhir. Samson has attributed his recent successes to divine blessings and wants to continue scoring goals and winning matches for India.
“After a few games of being sent off, you feel pressure because you have a man supporting you and you are not performing well. I thought, ‘Ordinary Sanju, you have to show something and return the confidence that the coach has.’ Thanks to God, something special has happened. The right-handed batsman has played 16 ODIs and 37 T20Is. Samson has compiled 510 runs in ODIs at an average of 56.66, including one century and three half-centuries. He has scored 810 T20I runs at an average of 27.93 and a strike rate of 155.17 including three centuries and two fifties.

Samson spoke about his long-standing relationship with Gautam Gambhir, which began during his initial days in the Indian Premier League. His first IPL team was Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where Gambhir served as captain. Samson said he joined the KKR B team at the age of 14 and reached the main team at the age of 17.
“Yes, it was. I had a good relationship with Gautam Gambhir since I was young. My first team in the IPL was KKR. When I was 14, they picked me in their B team. At the age of 17, I made it to the main team of KKR and that was when “KKR won the tournament under Gautam Gambhir.”
