Samsung’s Micro LED smartwatch concept is the brightest display I’ve ever seen on a watch

But back to the brightness on this Samsung Display Concept watch.

A sign near the watch says its brightness is less than 4,000 nits maximum, compared to the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s 3,000 nits display and the Pixel Watch 3’s 2,000 nits display. However, it was so bright that certain parts of the image looked a little washed out.

There’s also the question of why a very bright display is useful on the wrist, if it’s useful at all. If Samsung integrates this technology in the future Galaxy watch – And this is a big if – I can see how it would make sense in a Pro or Ultra model that’s designed for outdoor use. This bright display will be easy to see in direct sunlight, and can also enable the watch to act as a better flashlight in dark environments. There may be more surprising or useful uses besides.

I also wonder if this level of brightness will drain the battery more quickly, and how bright the watch face can get, especially if you wear it while sleeping.

Although we don’t know yet if a Micro LED smartwatch is on the horizon, the Samsung Display concept offers a glimpse of what’s technically possible. This perhaps points to what we may see in the future when technologies become cheaper and easier to mass produce.

If Samsung’s smartwatch concept is any indication of what’s to come, the future of smartwatches could be very bright indeed.
