Putin announces a three -day Russian ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin said that the ceasefire will run from May 8 to May 11 – which coincides with victory celebrations to celebrate the end of World War II.

In a statement that Putin announced that the ceasefire was “based on humanitarian considerations.”

Ukraine has not yet responded.

“Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example,” said a translation of the statement.

“In the event of violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the armed forces of the Russian Federation will provide sufficient and effective response.

“The Russian side again declares its willingness to peace talks without preconditions, and aims to eliminate the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, and to interact with international partners.”

The Kremlin announced a 30 -hour truce on Easter, but while the two sides reported a retreat in the fighting, they accused each other of hundreds of violations.

The ceasefire has been tried more than 20 times in Ukraine – all of them eventually failed, some within minutes of entry.
