Parliament will be called on Saturday to discuss emergency legislation to keep the British steel site in Scunthorpe, where the ministers are racing to avoid the company’s collapse and a loss of 3,500 jobs.

Sir Lindsay Huil, Speaker of the House of Commons, announced on Friday that he submitted a request to claim the deputies on Saturday, “to move forward in legislative proposals to ensure the continued operation of British steel furnaces.”

Downg Street said the legislation would allow the government to “direct steel companies in England”, but said it would stop full nationalization of the British steel.

“The draft law provides the government’s ability to direct steel companies in England, which we will use to protect Scunthorpe,” said a spokesman for Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer.

“It enables the UK government to maintain power and ensure public safety. It also guarantees that all options remain viable for the future of the factory and the ways it supports.

“We have been negotiating with the right -wing British owners since we got to the office. We have always been clear that there is a bright future for the United Kingdom. All options are still on the table.”

A government official said that the new powers will be used to maintain the smelting ovens under operation and request new raw materials to maintain the work of the site.

The conversations were continuing throughout the week between the ministers and the Jingye group, the Chinese owner of British Steel. Representatives will meet at 11 am on a very unusual Saturday, sitting to discuss emergency legislation.

Jingye warned last month that the remaining company’s melting ovens – the last in Britain – are no longer financially viable and began consultations on job losses.

Roy Ricos, Secretary -General of the Community Steel Federation, welcomed the emergency session: “It is important that a solution to secure a future for British steel is found as a vital strategic work. We cannot allow Britain to become the only G7 country without the ability to make primary steel.”
