Panama rejects Trump’s call for the United States to restore the canal

While the holiday spirit will dominate the news agenda, there are notable developments to watch around the world, as the three defining themes of 2024 – elections, war and inflation – continue to loom in the background.

Moldova’s pro-EU president-elect, Maia Sandu, will attend her inauguration on Tuesday. Its narrow electoral victory in October, despite alleged Russian interference in the process, would put the former Soviet country on the path to EU membership.

On the other hand, on Sunday, Georgia will have Mikheil Kavelashvili sworn in as president, and Croatia, a controversial pro-Russian country, will hold the first round of presidential elections on Sunday.

On Monday, Mozambique’s Supreme Court is set to deliver its ruling on the country’s disputed elections in October, while Albanian opposition parties are blocking roads to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is scheduled to deliver a speech on Christmas Day. Economists will scrutinize his words for clues about how President-elect Donald Trump’s tariffs will affect the pace and course of monetary policy.

The UK’s third quarter GDP figures will be released on Monday, after months of disappointing economic data from Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
