Our favorite books to read in 2024

I did a lot Of reading in 2024, and I’ve been very lucky to have enjoyed (mostly) all the books and comics I’ve picked up. This can make it difficult to choose favorites when it comes time to reflect on the year, but there was no doubt in my mind as to which book I loved best, because one in particular completely shocked me, tore my heart apart, made me laugh, made me cry, etc., etc. In addition: Stephen Graham Jones I was a teenage slasher.

The killing game genre isn’t exactly known for its emotional depth, so if you think about it, you’re in for a classic revenge game with some teen antics, I wouldn’t blame you. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong, this book does have those things. But the supernatural element of the plot, while a major part of the plot, seems secondary to the rollercoaster coming-of-age story that really lies at its heart.

Tully Driver doesn’t want to be a slasher, but he is. It’s in his blood, thanks to a series of strange incidents that are on the right path to sealing his fate. Amber, his best friend who dreams of dying or really riding, has a lot of knowledge on the subject and becomes his journey guide on this puzzling journey. I was a teenage slasher It deals with a lot of difficult topics, like grieving the loss of a parent young, something I instantly connected with, the pressure of trying to do right by the people you love, and the terrifying reality of growing up and growing into yourself. But it’s also often funny, which helps offset all the gore and tragedy.

This is the second year in a row that a Stephen Graham Jones book has reached the top of my list, which isn’t surprising since I’m a huge fan, but… I was a teenage slasher It really is on another level. Not only is it one of my favorite books of the year, it may be one of my favorite books of all time.
