OpenAI It is expanding access to its digital side-by-side editing space, Canvas, to all ChatGPT users and adding new features, the company announced today in a live stream, the fourth of its “12 Days of OpenAI” announcements.

Canvas, that was Announced in Octoberwas previously only available to ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, and Enterprise subscribers.

Available on desktop web browsers, it turns the traditional interface of ChatGPT with a chat at the top and a text input box at the bottom into a left sidebar, and on the right side of the chat session screen, it adds a new space for content the user is working on – such as a snippet of code for an application or Text document.

When a user speaks with ChatGPT and requests changes to the content on the right sidebar, it will automatically appear there with the changes implemented, rather than generating a completely new text response in the traditional interface. Canvas can also provide text and code suggestions, which will be implemented instantly.

Added canvas to GPT-4o

Starting today, Canvas will be integrated into GPT-4o, eliminating the need to switch to GPT 4o using Canvas in the form chooser. The canvas will automatically open for some pasted prompts or text. It is only available on the web version or Windows app of ChatGPT.

With the wider release, OpenAI has also updated Canvas to run Python code, support more text pasting, and can be launched in custom GPTs.

Users can paste Python code into ChatGPT which may open Canvas automatically. Previously, people were not allowed to know whether code they created or edited was working. They needed to copy the code back and run it in their own systems. Allowing Canvas to run code brings it closer to Anthropic Claude Antiqueswhich actually allowed people to see a sample web page from their code.

During the demo, OpenAI showed that Canvas can also create and preview drawings from code alone so developers or analysts can modify formulas or data before finalizing the graph. Canvas also has a feature that can find errors in your code and provide suggestions to fix them.

Custom GPTs with Canvas

For those who Create custom GPT nodesCanvas will be integrated by default, although users can still specify parameters for when and whether to open Canvas for prompts on the Assistant they created.

But for existing custom GPTs, OpenAI has not made Canvas a default option to avoid disrupting how it actually works. Users can add Canvas as a feature to their GPTs through Custom GPT Settings.

Adding Canvas makes custom GPTs as powerful and useful as basic ChatGPT, allowing for more features specific to customer needs.

OpenAI said it plans to “continue making improvements and launching new features available in Canvas in the near term.”

Features such as Canvas and Artifacts indicate The interface battlefield Model makers find themselves in a situation where users are looking for more useful features to continue using chat platforms.
