Matt Gaetz’s transcripts about alleged payments to sex workers were revealed in a new House report

The House Ethics Committee finally released its report a report regarding allegations against Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Monday after Donald Trump’s bid to nominate the former congressman for U.S. attorney general failed. While Gaetz has denied the allegations of having sex with a minor, it’s a very shocking read all around.

From at least 2017 to 2020, Gaetz allegedly paid thousands of dollars for sex with women, as well as a 17-year-old girl. The report also alleges that Gaetz used illegal drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, and accepted a gift trip to the Bahamas, which violated congressional rules. According to the report, Gaetz helped one of the women he was having sex with get a quick passport, and falsely told the State Department that she was one of his constituents.

Gaetz is also alleged to have obstructed Congress as it conducted an investigation into his conduct and refused to cooperate as the committee sought to determine whether the congressman had violated ethics rules. It’s unclear whether Gaetz will face government charges over any of these allegations, though the commission no longer has jurisdiction over Gaetz since he resigned his seat, even though he won re-election in November.

The congressional report found that, based on its investigation, “there was substantial evidence that Rep. Gaetz violated the House Rules, state and federal laws, and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, rape, illicit drug use, accepting impermissible gifts, and providing services.” “. Gaetz took to social media after the report was published to defend himself against the accusations contained in the report.

Many Republicans objected to the report’s publication, including Ethics Committee Chairman Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi. Guest wrote to dissenting members of the committee insisting that they no longer had the authority to release the results since Gaetz resigned, an argument that made no sense at all.

“We believe that acting outside the jurisdictional boundaries established by House rules and committee standards, especially when disclosed publicly, is a dangerous departure with potentially serious consequences,” Guest wrote.

It’s not clear what would be “dangerous” in releasing a report to Congress unless it included something inaccurate, which Guest does not claim.
