Aston Villa missed the opportunity to climb the standings as they had to share points with Brighton in an exciting match at Villa Park.

Brighton – who have now gone seven Premier League games without a win – took the lead when a long ball over the top tricked the Villa defense and Simon Adingra was able to tap home.

Ollie Watkins equalized from a penalty kick and then passed the ball to his England teammate Morgan Rogers to score a wonderful goal while Villa took over.

But Brighton stuck it out and right-back Tariq Lamptey fired a brilliant low shot to ensure the Seagulls went home with a point.

Villa finished the year in ninth place, three points behind Newcastle in fifth, while Brighton ranks tenth, two points behind.

Brighton lost 18 points from winning positions this season, but got off to a great start when Ezri Konsa received a long ball from Joao Pedro, and Adingra’s touch was exceptional.

Villa thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Rogers was brought down by Jan-Paul van Hecke, but they were then awarded a penalty when Rogers went down after a corner kick.

Watkins, who returned to the team on his 29th birthday due to John Doran’s suspension, did nothing wrong.

Villa were in front at this stage and Rogers’ finish after Watkins’ chest pass was superb.

But Brighton recovered well and Lamptey’s low strike sealed the equaliser.
