Guinness World Records has addressed the assertions of Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, who claims to have broken the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Chef Smith made the announcement during a press conference at the La Hotel on July 2, 2024, where he presented a certificate as proof of his accomplishment.

Chef Smith went so far as to provide testimony to defend his claim of breaking the longest cooking marathon by an individual. Watch the video below

He mentioned this during the press conference in which he announced the alleged achievement.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to announce that I am now the new world record holder in the cooking competition,” he said.

The inscription on his diploma reads: “Longest culinary marathon (individual) is 802 hours and 25 minutes, achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) at Spintex, Accra, Ghana. From February 1 to March 6, 2024.”

In an official email response from GHone TV, Guinness World Records debunked the claim, confirming that the person who holds the record for the longest cooking marathon is Alan Fisher from Ireland, who achieved a time of 119 hours, 57 minutes and 16 seconds in a matzo. Shimane, Japan from September 28 to October 3, 2023.

This investigation was necessary due to doubts about the validity of Chef Smith’s testimony and the lack of Guinness World Records entries confirming his supposed accomplishment.

Guinness World Records confirms Ghanaian chef Smith Smith ‘does not hold a GWR title’ and his certificate is not authentic

A further update from TV3 Ghana regarding Guinness World Records confirms that the information is incorrect, as they have directly contacted Guinness World Records via the X account.

GWR has confirmed to TV3 that Chef Smith does not record the longest cooking time.

Another update from Guinness World Records revealed that the cooking marathon record is no longer valid.

GWR has deactivated a number of records for various reasons, such as removing the fastest record by a violinist in 2017 due to challenges in judging the quality of the performance.

According to a report by Asase Fm, Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service and is currently detained at La Police Station in Accra.

The details of his arrest are not yet clear, but it comes shortly after Chef Smith announced that he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for achieving the record time in the cooking marathon.

According to additional sources, Nana Buru reportedly brought security personnel to the conference venue due to an alleged contract dispute with Smith.
