About 39,000 John Deere ZTrak zero-turn mowers equipped with Kawasaki engines are currently being recalled in the U.S.
The recall was announced Thursday by Kawasaki Motors USA. This was motivated by the “fire and burn risks” the engines potentially posed, according to A.J Reminder notification Published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Voltage regulators inside the engines “can fail during use or during product storage, causing the engine to overheat,” Kawasaki Motors USA said in the notice.

Consumers should “immediately stop using the recalled mowers” until they can make repairs, according to the CSPC notice.

The recalled Kawasaki-engined mowers have model numbers Z720E, Z730M, Z740R or Z760R under their seat and certain serial numbers “on the right side of the machine near the rear tire,” she said.
Customers had purchased it from Authorized John Deere dealers Between October 2018 and September 2024.
Although the problem with the engine voltage regulators led to five fires and more than two dozen “melting and/or smoking” incidents, no one was responsible. No injuriesaccording to the CPSC notification.
The notice stated that the companies are contacting affected customers directly.
Kawasaki and John Deere have posted information about the mower recall on their websites.

“We strive to ensure John Deere products are of exceptional quality,” John Deere said on its recall page. “In the event of a recall or product improvement program on a John Deere product, we will make every effort to get this important information to you as quickly as possible.”

Repairs to the recalled mowers will be performed free of charge, Kawasaki said in the recall notice.
John Deere ZTrak zero-turn mowers can reach speeds of 7-10 miles per hour, depending on the chain, according to the agricultural equipment company.
