Jamie Carragher has issued a warning to Trent Alexander-Arnold about the possibility of him joining Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.
Carragher stressed that Liverpool fans would find it “difficult to accept” such a move, especially given Alexander-Arnold’s domestic standing.
The Liverpool star, an integral part of the team’s success, was an outstanding player and his departure would be a huge blow to the club’s future plans.
Carragher’s statements come at a time when Liverpool is enjoying a strong season under the management of Arne Slot, as it sits at the top of the English Premier League, two points ahead of second-placed Chelsea, and also tops the Champions League group stage table.
As Alexander-Arnold enters the final year of his contract with the club, questions have been raised about his long-term future.
Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the England international But Carragher has some reservations about the potential transfer.
Carragher wrote in his book Daily Telegraph column:
“My colleague Michael Owen had one year remaining on his contract when he joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in 2004. He too was in a struggling Liverpool team with the arrival of a new manager – Rafael Benitez – and a great deal of uncertainty.
“Once again, Real Madrid paid just £8m for a footballer worth much more than that. Michael’s time at Manchester United later in his career could have done further damage to his legacy, but the terms of his departure To Real Madrid did not help him.
“That’s the biggest issue for Trent – the free transfer. As with Macca (Steve McManaman), the fans will feel the club is losing an £80m player for nothing, and they won’t like that. My advice to Trent is to sign a new contract, which includes a clause. A reasonable penalty, that would give the club some value if Real Madrid or someone else decided to fulfill him.
“The fans’ attitude towards Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom are also out of contract in the summer, is not the same as it is towards Trent. There are a lot of reasons for that but a big part of it is the local boy factor. The feeling is that playing for Liverpool should be the ultimate ambition.” For the Liverpool player it was the same for me, Michael (Owen) and Stevie (Steven Gerrard), and it will be the same for Trent and Curtis Jones.
Is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s reign at Liverpool over?

It appears that the right-back has decided to leave the Premier League leaders.
He achieved everything he could at Liverpool and now he feels the time is right for a new chapter in his career.
A move to Real Madrid in Spain would reunite him with his best friend Jude Bellingham while also giving him the chance to compete to win the Champions League every season.
Naturally, his departure will come as a huge blow to the Merseyside club who will lose the player on a free when they could have fetched a record fee for a defender in other circumstances.
Carragher has a right to how the fans will feel, but players always listen to their hearts when deciding their future, and for Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid represents the perfect opportunity.
Giants League Real Madrid are also interested in Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
