LONDON (AP) – The Jaguar and Land Rover car maker of shipments to the United States, as it works to reduce the 25 % tax impact on vehicle imports imposed by the Trump administration.

Jaguar Rover Automotive, one of the largest car makers in Britain, said on Saturday that stopping will be held this month.

“The United States of America is an important market for luxury brands in JLR,” the company said in a statement. “While we are working to address the new trade conditions with external business partners, we take some short -term measures, including the stopping of shipping in April, where we develop our plans from mid to long.”

The UK car industry is expected to reach a new tariff, which comes at a time when British car makers are struggling with low demand at home and the need to re -equip their factories to move to electric cars.

“The industry is already facing many opposite winds and this announcement comes in the worst possible time,” said Mike Hazi, CEO of the UK’s auto manufacturers and merchants Association. “SMMT is in constant contact with the government and will search for discussions to accelerate because we need to secure a way that supports jobs and economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The number of UK cars decreased by 13.9 % to 779,584 cars last year, according to SMMT. More than 77 % of those vehicles were directed to the export market.

UK car makers have already taken steps to reduce the immediate impact of tariffs by building stocks in the United States before the increase entered.

SMMT numbers show that exports to the United States jumped 38.5 % from the previous year in December, 12.4 % in January and 34.6 % in February.

British car makers shipped 8.3 billion pounds (10.7 billion dollars) from vehicles to the United States within 12 months to September, making cars the largest individual goods export to the United States, according to government statistics.

But cars are a relatively small part of the total trade between Britain and the United States, which are highly weighting towards services.

Britain has exported 179.4 billion pounds (231.2 billion dollars) of goods and services to the United States in the year until September, with services that make up 68.2 % of this number.
