Israeli air strikes hit the main airport in Yemen

Airstrikes were reported on two cities in Yemen.

Eyewitnesses and the ruling Houthi rebels said the country’s main international airport and a military base were targeted in the capital, Sanaa, while a power station was hit in the western coastal city of Hodeidah, Agence France-Presse reported.

Israel said it carried out the strikes and that its air force targeted the Houthis’ “military infrastructure.”

The Houthi-run Yemeni Al-Masirah TV channel reported that three people were killed in the raids and 11 others were wounded.

Two of them were reportedly killed at Sanaa airport, and the other at Ras Issa port.

It is unclear whether they were civilians or Houthi rebels.

The Israeli army said in a statement, “(Israeli) fighter jets carried out strikes based on intelligence information on military targets belonging to the terrorist Houthi regime on the western coast and inside Yemen.”

Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that he was at Sanaa airport at the time of the attack.

“As we were about to board our plane from Sanaa, about two hours ago, the airport was subjected to an aerial bombardment,” he wrote on X.

“One of our plane’s crew members was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport.”

Iran described the strikes as a “clear violation of international peace and security.”

The Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel since the first months of the Gaza war, which began in October 2023.

Earlier this week, the Israeli Defense Minister said that his country was preparing for a “strong strike” on the Houthis, warning that it would “decapitate” the group’s leadership.

The Houthis are an armed political and religious group supported by Iran. The group has ruled large parts of western Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, since the overthrow of the internationally recognized government in 2015.
