Russia’s war on Ukraine has been going on for nearly three years, with Ukraine losing territory and declining morale among its soldiers in 2024.
“Even a year ago, I never heard any soldiers say anything negative about their commanders,” said Samia Kallab, an AP news correspondent in Ukraine. “Now people aren’t just saying it to me on the record, they’re going online on their social media, with their names, ranks and units, telling everyone they know about what’s not working.”
Non-combatants in Ukraine are also suffering from the effects of a long war.
“War is total, so you can’t escape it,” Kolab said.
“You’re walking down the street, looking at some beautiful little things for sale, and you see a little sign that says: ‘Please buy these handmade things. “I’m trying to raise money for my husband’s military unit,” she said.
“There are donation boxes everywhere,” she added. “The amount of amputees I see walking down the street, I see them every day.”
