‘I want to happily kidnap you’: Gurgaon resident shares Uber driver’s ‘charging behaviour’ at 4am

A Gurgaon resident has recounted a terrifying encounter with an Uber driver, which left her terrified and prompted her to rush home in the early hours of the morning. The incident was shared on Reddit by user kushpyro1, who posted a screenshot of the disturbing conversation with the driver.

In her post on the r/gurgaon subreddit, the user described her anxiety as she prepared to catch the train. “I’m shaking as I write this right now. I have a train in an hour, and God knows if I’ll get there on time,” they wrote, explaining that they had booked a priority sedan taxi to the station.

As the driver approached, the user decided to check the OTP and open Uber chat, where he found a strange message from the driver. The screenshot revealed a brief exchange: The passenger texted, “I’m here. Anand Vihar station landing. Please come,” to which the driver replied ominously: “Go to Anand Vihar. I want to go kidnap you happily.”

The user expressed his panic, saying, “I don’t know what impulse arose within me (4 in the morning, barely sleeping or panicking after reading a text from a guy who was literally a few seconds ahead of me), but I thought about canceling the cab.” When they started canceling the trip, the driver did the same, prompting the user to flee back inside with their luggage. They were able to take a screenshot right before the cancellation.

While many Reddit users were upset by the message, some suggested that it may have been a case of an autocorrect gone wrong. “Looks like the autocorrect went wrong. But it’s a good thing you took another taxi. That was terrible,” one user commented, while another speculated it might be a translation error, noting that the phrase didn’t make much sense.

Uber replied

In a subsequent post, the user noted that he tried multiple translations to clarify the driver’s message but found that “kidnapping” was the only accurate translation of “apaharan.”

The user reported the incident to Uber’s response team, who assured him that the driver would be banned indefinitely from accepting or seeing his ride requests. They added: “We will contact the driver to understand the issue from his perspective. Disciplinary measures may include making the driver aware of the impact of his actions/words or terminating his Uber account.”
