Odisha Police have cracked a mysterious murder case involving a 35-year-old woman, thanks to a tailor’s mark on a blood-stained shirt discovered near the crime scene. This progress eventually led to the arrest of three individuals, according to officials.

On December 13, authorities found the woman’s body on the banks of the Kathgodi River in the Kandarpur police station area of Cuttack, PTI reported.

Since the identity of the deceased woman could not be established and no missing person report had been filed in the entire state, the police had to recover the weapon used in the crime – the helicopter.

Cuttack DCP Jagmohan Meena described the case as a major challenge for the investigation team.

Although the deceased had tattoos on his hands, which did not help in identifying him, authorities found blood-stained clothing – specifically a shirt and pants – near the river bank where the body was discovered.

Mina revealed that the two pieces of clothing were branded “New Star Tailors.”

The police then focused their investigations on the tailor brand and identified around 10 tailors in Odisha with the same or similar names. They checked these tailors and compared the tag designs with those on the shirt and pants recovered from the crime scene.

However, no matches were found in Odisha. It was only when a tailor from Ganjam district informed the police that such marks were being used in Gujarat, the investigation took a new direction, the senior police officer explained.

Officials from Cuttack contacted the Gujarat Police, who tracked down the tailor in the city of Surat. The tailor’s card number “3833” matched, and further investigations revealed that the shirt was sewn for a person named “Babu”.

“No other details were available. However, the tailor gave important evidence that he had to return INR 100 to the customer ‘Babu’ but did not have the rest. So, he transferred INR 100 to someone’s e-wallet,” Meena said. This number was called and it turned out to be a friend of Babu’s.”

Babu has been identified as 27-year-old Jagannath Dohori, also known as Babu or Babi from Kendrapada. “It turned out that he (Babu) was returning to Surat by train. The train was passing through Rayagada when he was arrested,” Meena added.

During interrogation, Babu revealed that he is the brother-in-law of the deceased woman. He also confessed to committing the crime with the help of his brother Balaram Dhuri (the woman’s husband) and his cousin Hapi Dhuri.

The three people were arrested, according to police.

DCP Meena said, “Balaram Dohori was the husband of the deceased woman. The motive behind the crime was a chronic marital dispute between the deceased and her husband. Balaram suspected that the deceased was having an extramarital affair with someone.”
