Hillary Clinton says Republicans are taking orders from ‘the richest man in the world’ to shut down the government

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Hillary Clinton Thursday looked at Elon Musk’s influence on the spending drama on Capitol Hill.

“If you’re just catching up: The GOP, taking orders from the richest man in the world, is on track to shut down the government over the holidays, cutting off pay for our troops and nutrition benefits for low-income families just in time for Christmas,” the 2016 presidential candidate wrote. On X.

Clinton, a former first lady and senator, was in Congress from 2001 to 2009.

Her comments came as Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson He issued a new version of the continuing resolution, or CR, to keep the government open after the Friday night deadline.

Musk came out in strong opposition to the original spending deal Johnson negotiated with Democrats, threatening to support a primary challenge to any Republican who votes for it.

Without reaching an acceptable agreement to postpone the government funding deadline to March and continue spending at 2024 levels, the government will enter a partial lockdown at midnight on Saturday.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., lamented that the latest agreement was torpedoed by conservative opposition, with input from DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Everyone agreed, and then it was torpedoed by Elon Musk, who apparently became the fourth branch of government. This is just an unbearable way to proceed,” he said.

“Democrats are going to try to figure out how we can salvage the public good as a wreck that was just pushed around.”

Chants of “No to hell” were heard inside the room where the Democrats were meeting after the text of the bill was published.

The latest continuing resolution would extend current government funding levels for three months and also suspend the debt limit for two years, something President-elect Trump has called for.

This comes after the original 1,500-page text sparked opposition from the right over politics and funding.

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives could vote on the new bill as early as Thursday evening.

It is not immediately clear whether the new deal will be approved. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who led opposition to the initial bill, also criticized the new deal.
