Dee Dee claimed that Gypsy suffered from several serious medical conditions, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and delayed development, which convinced those around her that Gypsy was seriously ill. As a result, Gypsy endured countless unnecessary medical treatments and surgeries, including the removal of her teeth and salivary glands. Dee Dee also confined Gypsy to a wheelchair, insisted she was unable to walk, and inserted a feeding tube to meet fabricated nutritional needs. Gypsy was cut off from her extended family and the outside world, with Dee Dee exercising complete control over her life.

On June 14, 2015, Gypsy’s then-boyfriend, Nicholas GodejohnDee Dee is fatally stabbed in her sleep, a planned crime involving Gypsy. Gypsy, who was present during the murder, later admitted that she believed it was her only way to escape her mother’s control. She was charged with second-degree murder and, after pleading guilty, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. On the other hand, Godejohn was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In her memoir, Gypsy publicly revealed that she and her mother had an unusually close relationship, bathing together, sleeping in the same bed, and watching the same television shows.

“Her interests in science fiction, fantasy, and The People’s Court became my passions,” she recalled in her book. When I showed curiosity in separate items, like Barbie dolls, she was there to shrug: “Now, you don’t want those dolls when you have so many stuffed animals to play with.”

Gypsy explained that the title of her memoir holds special significance, as it symbolizes the first time she stood and walked on her own.

“The first time I got back on my feet was my first failed attempt to leave my mother. “In processing and retelling my memories, a lot of truth was revealed to me, including hurting other people in my family and community,” Gypsy added. “I hope to engage readers by describing my journey, rather than explaining it.
