Former US Congress member George Santos, who lied about his life story and fraudulent donors, was sentenced to more than seven years in prison, crying as he hears his punishment.
Santos, who admitted that he was guilty last summer on charges of fraud in federal identity and stolen identity, appealed to mercy, and told the court with tears that he was “modest” and “punishing” and realized that he had betrayed the confidence of his voters.
He said, “I offer the deepest of my apologies,” adding: “I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the way forward.”
It is clear that the American District Court Judge, Joanna Sepert, was not convinced. “Where do you regret it? Where do I see it?” I asked, while he was sentenced to 87 months in prison behind bars. She said that the former politician appears to be “always a mistake for someone else.”
The New York Republics served in Congress less than a year before his expulsion from his colleagues in the House of Representatives in 2023. He confessed to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of nearly ten people, including his family members, to finance his winning campaign.
As part of the guilt acknowledgment, Santos agreed to pay nearly $ 580,000 from the United States in a penalty kick in addition to prison time.
The 36 -year -old did not respond to the journalists’ questions as he was walking in Long Island, but he told the Associated Press on Thursday that he had resigned from his fate.
Santos wrote in a text message on Thursday: “I do so and any person who will do this given the circumstances,” adding that he is “ready to face music.”
“Everyone hates George”
Public Prosecutor Ryan Harris said that some Santos victims are “very weak”, including a woman who suffers from brain damage and two Octogenic men who suffer from dementia. Harris said that Santos said in recent days he had no intention to pay the victims immediately.
“People think about it as a crime without a victim because it relates to money. There are many victims in this crime,” added Roberta Redon, New York Labor Commissioner. The court addressed a victim that Santos collected unemployment when it was employed by Florida.

Defense lawyer Andrew Mansilla, the former worker, was filmed as a turbulent personality characterized by adversity. The lawyer said that Santos, who has no former criminal record, grew up in a “broken house” and was subjected to bullying throughout his life.
As a result, he built the man who wanted to be, not who was. ”Mansila said.” He did so because he believed that the world will not accept it for what he was.
“In its depths, it is warm, nice, careful and thoughtful,” said Mansila.
But the lawyer now said, “Everyone hates George Santos.”
It enhances the inscription account in the last hours of freedom
Prosecutors in the last court files have argued that he was “still unreasonable” and did not show real remorse, despite what he was claiming. They referred to the recent comments made by Santos on the social media in which he threw himself as a victim to overcome the Public Prosecution.
Santos lawyers called for a two -year prison period, which is the mandatory minimum sentence to steal the strict identity. They argued that this punishment was similar to the provisions that were delivered to other political figures who were convicted of similar financial crimes.
Santos was elected in 2022, as he was turning a rich area representing parts of Queens and Long Island from democratic control.
George Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives in the United States after a series of criminal charges and moral investigations. He is only the sixth person who is expelled from the room.
Soon after, it was revealed that the political unknown has fabricated most of his life story, as he drew himself as a successful work owner in the prestigious Wall Street companies and held a valuable real estate portfolio.
In fact, Santos was struggling financially and even facing evacuation.
The revelation led to the investigations into Congress and the criminal on how to finance its campaign.
Santos made many social media posts on Thursday, including one final plug for Cameo, where he records customized video messages for $ 100.
Santos wrote: “Think of the future and any celebration or event later this year. Book it today.”
