The Lithuanian army says it is searching for four US soldiers missing for two days during the training in the Baltic state, amid reports died.
The army said earlier that the four soldiers and their followers were lost on Tuesday afternoon near the border with Belarus. The US military said the car was flooded in water.
The Lithuanian army said on X that “the rescue operation continues extensively,” and there was no evidence “confirming the death of the forces.”
NATO president Mark Retty said earlier that he was informed of their deaths, but added that he had no more details.
Lymph and foreign forces, helicopters and government border guards were deployed to search for missing soldiers.
The soldiers were training near Babridi in East Lithuania with other NATO forces.
The US Army and Africa Public Affairs Office confirmed in its statement that the soldiers “drag the tactical training scheduled at the time of the accident.”
They added that the soldiers were part of the first brigade, the third infantry squad.
The Lituanian authorities received a report on the disappearance of the soldiers on Tuesday afternoon.
“A possible scene has now been identified,” the Lithuanian army said in a statement on Wednesday.
“People are working) around the clock. Everyone is still ready, ready to provide medical support to emergency,” said Lithuanian Defense Minister Dofil Sakalin on X.
Lithuania, a member of NATO and a member of the European Union, hosts more than 1,000 American soldiers, stationed on the basis of rotation.
“I personally thank the armed forces and the first respondents who quickly came to help us in our searches,” said Lieutenant -General Charles Costanza, the general commander of the general.
