Jan Vertonghen, one of the most distinguished football players in Belgium, announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
The 37 -year -old defender, who had a wonderful profession that spanned nearly two decades and played his best years in Tottenham, will cling to his shoes soon.
Thinking about his decision, Vertonghen shared his ideas about getting away from the game.
He said: βIn recent weeks, it has become clear to me that these will be the last games. This is not an easy decision in any way, but this is the right decision.
“I have noticed that it became more difficult and more difficult to physically prepare myself for training and matches and show myself as a player I want to be.
“Not only towards fans and teammates, but also towards myself. That’s why I will stop after this season.”

Vertonghen’s profession was not less than unusual. He started his career with Ajax, where 220 games appeared with the Dutch giants.
Then his talent and leadership transferred him to the English Premier League, where he spent eight successful years in Tottenham Hotspur, collecting 315 games.
Benfica followed him before returning to Belgium in 2022 to join Anderlecht. Since then, the captain’s badge has been wearing nearly three seasons, and played 77 games.
Behind the club’s football, Vertonghen’s influence on the Belgian national team was historically. With 157 capsules in his name, he holds the record as the most convenient Belgium player. His contributions were useful in shaping the past, present and the future of the Red Devils.
With his career approaching at the end of May, Vertonghen remains committed to giving everything he has in the final term for this season.
He added: “I will give her everything I have in the last eleven games and we hope to test great moments with fans and teammates.
“I am very proud of what I managed to try and what I achieved. I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout these years of my heart.”
