Five other Amazon facilities are allowing worker strikes

Truck driver unions at five additional Amazon facilities voted to continue strikes, following similar actions in New York City and Illinois. The International Brotherhood of Steel (IBT) announced in a statement that union members “unanimously” approved measures to allow strikes at four Southern California facilities and a fifth facility in Atlanta.

The four facilities are located in Southern California in City of Industry, Palmdale, Victorville and San Bernardino, according to the report. . This brings the total number of Amazon facilities that have allowed worker strikes to eight. The total includes a facility in Skokie, Illinois and On Staten Island and in Queens. IBT represents just under 10,000 workers at 10 Amazon facilities nationwide.

These facilities agreed to strike in the middle of the holiday shopping season, one of the busiest and most lucrative times of the year for the online retail giant. Amazon staff went on strike to protest low wages, dangerous working conditions and Amazon’s “unlawful refusal to recognize their union,” according to IBT data.

Teamsters General President Sean N. O’Brien said in the statement that Amazon has failed to provide adequate compensation and protection for its workforce. If their demands are ignored, O’Brien says they will go on strikes.

“Amazon workers want to make a good living, get decent health care, and be safe on the job,” O’Brien said. “They are tired of the disrespect, and if Amazon continues to pressure them, they will go on strike.”
