With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, there has been a lot of promotion to capitalize on all the hype surrounding The Avengers, such as the breakout movie Spider-Man: No Way Home figures from Marvel Legends. Although Marvel Studios currently faces an uphill battle to return to the glory they once enjoyed, both at the box office and with their biggest blockbusters, Disney knows that fans still can’t get enough of this fantastic series of interconnected films under Infinity saga. And this year, the company introduced a massive collection inspired by one of the most pivotal moments in the entire MCU, courtesy of Avengers: Endgame.
In the third act of the climax ‘Avengers: Endgame’ battle against Thanos (read our oral history of this epic scene here)our heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) come together in a fight against the Mad Titan, who has time-traveled to his future from another timeline. Thanos puts up a tough fight, and while he gets the upper hand at one point — thanks in large part to Cap being worthy of wielding Mjolnir and summoning lightning to strike purple that crushes people — the villain eventually comes back and lands some crushing blows against Cap’s trusty shield.
Despite pieces of the armor being shattered and his arm sustaining a terrible wound, Cap stands, attaches the battle-damaged armor to his injured limb and prepares for his final stand. Fortunately, he’s saved by the arrival of his old ally (and future Captain America successor) Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and everyone else dusted by a now-decapitated Infinity Stones-powered Thanos.
Now, thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, you can bring home a high-quality, life-sized replica of Captain America’s damaged shield standing strong with him in the final battle against Thanos (which you may have seen in 2024 Movie Holiday Gift Guide). Disney was kind enough to send this prop replica my way, and believe me when I say this is the best of the best Marvel collectibles. While Hasbro has been releasing replicas of collectibles in their Marvel Legends collection in recent years, such as Cool new Green Goblin helmetNone of them can compare to this amazing piece from the Disney Store.
You can display (or model) Captain America’s shield all day long
Captain America’s battle-damaged shield from “Avengers: Endgame” is a limited edition collectible with only 1,500 made. It comes in a box that looks like the kind of box you might find lying around Avengers headquarters in upstate New York, or at least what’s left of it after the final battle.
Unlike Hasbro’s versions of Captain America’s shield, this is not plastic. The armor itself is made of iron, and has genuine leather straps on the back that you can attach to your arm. However, even though it is a high-quality replica, it comes with some built-in playability as well.
There is a small sound box on the back of the shield between the leather straps that produces motion-activated sound effects, such as the clanging sound the shield makes when it flies through the air, or the metallic clang when a projectile or enemy hits the shield.
This shield measures 24″ x 2 1/3″ x 17 1/2″, which is the same size as the shield Steve Rogers carried in the MCU. Since it’s made of iron, you can really feel the weight on your arm when you wear it. This is exactly the kind of item that would complement any original Captain America collection for your next Comic-Con appearance.
This Captain America shield holder could be a little more stylish
However, as great as this armor is, there are some drawbacks. First of all, the stand included with the shield looks very cheap. For a prop replica that costs $400, you would think a more elegant stand would be included, perhaps containing some sort of official plaque and issue number. But it’s a cheap three-piece stand that you can assemble yourself. It’s not as cool as Avengers Assemble.
As for the armor itself, if there’s one complaint I have, it’s that I wish the scratches and damage to the face of the armor looked more intentional and detailed. While the makers of the prop replica did a good enough job of changing the lines and dents around the armor to make it look like it was worn in battle – I know that the broken side of the armor couldn’t be as jagged or broken as it would be if it was actually broken by a blade Huge Thanos – I would like to see more of the blazing black and maybe even a little more damage in the areas that were hit during Cap’s fight. But the design of the broken side of the armor still looks great from the front, and it has blemishes on the broken edges, so that’s pretty cool.
Overall, there are too many generic brown lines that were clearly applied with some sort of scratch tool and not enough marks that look like actual scratches and dings. If you look at any shot of Cap’s shield after it’s broken in “Avengers: Endgame,” you can see that it looks a lot dirtier and damaged than this prop replica. This is to be expected, since Disney probably didn’t want it to look completely ruined, but it’s supposed to be damaged after all.
What’s interesting is that “Avengers: Endgame” gives no indication of what happened to the broken armor. We never see her after the final battle, and Steve Rogers doesn’t take her with him when he returns the Infinity Stones to their correct timelines. So, for now, you can pretend you swiped Cap’s shield from the debris-filled battlefield at Avengers HQ.
Captain America’s battle-damaged shield from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was originally on sale at D23, and is now Available now to order from the Disney Store online.
In addition, disney store It has a bunch of other great replica items that are just as good as Captain America’s battle damaged shield, not to mention some other high end collectibles. Here’s a summary of some of what you can find there now:
