Elton John believes there is a “higher power” that helped him overcome the problems in his life

In a new interview, the British singer expressed his gratitude to someone who helped him overcome depression, loneliness and drug addiction.

In the past, Elton John has discussed his other personal struggles, including how he lost the sight in one eye due to a debilitating eye infection.

The 77-year-old had, at various stages of his life, struggled with drug addiction issues, depression and a period of loneliness.

He now attributes his victory over these struggles to a “higher being” who he believes has watched over him throughout his life. He also admitted that although he felt there was something greater in his life, he had simply never “acknowledged” that existence before.

“I don’t really believe in the God of the Bible that much, but I have faith,” the “Your Song” singer told the outlet. “My higher power has been taking care of me my whole life; it overcame drugs, it overcame depression, it overcame loneliness, and it got me sober.”

John added: “I think he was there the whole time. But I didn’t acknowledge him.”

Today, John has been sober for several decades after being introduced to cocaine by his former lover and manager, John Reed.

Reflecting on this lifestyle, the singer admitted that turning to drugs initially helped him overcome his crippling shyness, but eventually consumed him and led to “terrible decisions.”

Among these things is his tendency to pursue romantic relationships in unhealthy and destructive ways.

The song writer shared, “I wanted love so badly, I was just taking hostages. I would see someone I loved and spend three or four months together, and then they would resent me because they didn’t have anything in their life other than me. It really bothers me to think about how many people might “I hurt them.”

Since overcoming his struggle with addiction, John has become deeply committed to helping others break free from its grip. Having witnessed first-hand the devastating impact of drug use, he now advocates avoiding all drugs, including legal marijuana.

He added: “I insist that it is addictive. It leads to the use of other drugs. When you are stoned – and I was stoned – you do not think normally.”

Despite his huge song catalogue, John still hates making music videos and feels they are more suitable for “good looking people”.

He shared, “I’m not very good at looking at myself. I don’t think you’ll ever lose your physical awareness. I just think it’ll stay with you forever. But I’m much better.”

The Royal Academy of Music also strongly dislikes television, claiming that it does more harm to an artist’s career and personality than good.

“Being on TV all the time kills your career, kills your vitality, absolutely kills your appeal,” John added.

These days, he prefers to spend his time enjoying the little things in life and doesn’t mind not being able to play music again if it means he won’t be able to listen to it again.

Last July, John suffered loss of vision in his right eye due to an infection he contracted while abroad.

However, he did not reveal the problem until September, explaining that he felt positive about the progress he had made in his healing and recovery.

He recently shared an update on his condition during an interview with ABC NewsHe revealed that although there is hope for improvement, he is currently unable to compose music.

“I’m kind of stuck in the moment… when I go into the studio and record, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric at first,” he shared.

John added: “It was never lucky for something like this to happen. It kind of hit me and I couldn’t see anything, I couldn’t read anything, I couldn’t watch anything.”
