Elon Musk says DOGE will try to meet its goal of $2 trillion in cuts, but admits it may fail

“I think we’ll try to get $2 trillion. I think that’s the best outcome,” Musk told Ben, adding that he believes that if DOGE aims for $2 trillion in cuts, they have a “good chance of getting one.”

Although he acknowledged the committee’s goal, Musk believes it is walking into a “very target-rich environment” and that DOGE will have no problems finding places to cut.

“It’s like you’re in a room full of targets,” Musk said. “As if you can close your eyes and you can’t miss.”

While Musk doesn’t seem concerned about DOGE being able to know what to cut, he did express concern about making government workers “care about spending” taxpayer money. He also claimed that those in government “who care” about “spending money effectively” are facing roadblocks.

“The system prevents them from doing that,” Musk told Ben.

Instead of acting as a model department, the DOGE will act as a committee outside the government to study issues of spending, waste, and efficiency. DOGE is scheduled to operate for two years and will be led by Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
